- In electronic imaging and digital photography, indexed color is the reference color mapping for 8-bit or less computer monitors, in order to reduce images to their smallest file sizes, allowing for quick download and easy display of images on web pages. An 8-bit monitor indexes 256 unique color codes for each pixel.
