Scope note
Describes the inelastic scattering of light which occurs in a small percentage of photons scattered by an excitation, resulting in a frequency shift due to an energy exchange between the incident light photons and the scattering atoms. The phenomenon was identified by Chandrasekhara Raman in 1928. It forms the subject of study of Raman spectroscopy.
