Scope note
A manufactured object that serves as the working model for the production of subsequent copies. The term is most often associated with three-dimensional objects that are functional: furniture, buildings, and machines, and less often with painting, drawing, or sculpture. Usage is extended to paintings and drawings to describe conceptual affinities, rather than discrete objects. Use "prototypes" to describe sculpture only if the works conform to other completed works in size, shape, and detail. For small-scale three dimensional renderings for sculpture, use "maquettes," and for more finely detailed sketches for sculpture or painting, use "bozzetti."
