- Usage extended from the original Greek or the Latin "palimpsēstus," which refers to parchment that has been reused to inscribe a second text, see "palimpsests (manuscripts)"; as the general object genre, the meaning is extended to refer to other objects, such as brass plates or stained glass that have been erased or turned over to be re-inscribed or re-painted on the reverse, or structures characterized by superimposed features produced at two or more distinct periods.
