In modern usage, reproduction from a gamete without fertilization, occurring most commonly in invertebrates and lower plants, but also occasionally in some vertebrates, such as birds and reptiles, that normally would require sexual reproduction. The term was formerly also used for asexual reproduction, as by fission or budding.
