Scope note
Crosses used or worn by certain Christians as penance or a symbol of penance having been done. Examples include large crosses carried or dragged by penitents during Holy Week processions, images of crosses emblazoned on the garments of penitents, or cross-shaped objects worn around the neck, sometimes having rough or sharp points intended to injure the skin.
