Scope note
Paintings with subject matter of interest to women, particularly romances such as the Tale of Genji. There are few if any contemporary definitions of the term, resulting in ambiguity about the style of painting or the gender of the artists creating these works. This term was used in the Heian period (794-1185). For paintings or prints that depict the beauty of women, see also "bijinga," a term coined in the Edo (1615-1868) or Meiji (1868-1912) period.
