Scope note
A style of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th which was inspired by Assyrian works of art, most specifically sculpture, of the 9th to 7th centuries BC. The Assyrian Revival manifested itself both in the decorative arts, in the form of the ‘Assyrian style’ jewelry produced in England, and in the fine arts in the paintings of a number of later 19th-century French Salon painters. Assyrian motifs were also incorporated in a fairly wide range of buildings in the early 20th century, particularly in the United States.
