Scope note
Historically, those who prepared and sold drugs for medicinal purposes, this business being conducted by a druggist or pharmacist since ca. 1800. From about 1700 apothecaries began to act as general medical practitioners. Modern apothecaries hold this status legally in some places by examination and licence, but in popular usage the term is archaic.
