Scope note
A white ash composed chiefly of phosphate of lime; obtained by burning bones in air. Bone ash is used in cleaning jewelry; bone ash cupels have been related in Medieval and later archaeological contexts to the refining of noble metals in alchemy, assaying, jewelry, and coin minting.
