Scope note
On the geologic time scale, the youngest epoch of the Tertiary, or of the more recently designated Neogene, following Miocene and preceding the Pleistocene epoch of the Quaternary period. It extends from about 5 million to 1.8 million years ago. The Pliocene is marked by the change to a cooler, dry seasonal climate and the presence of essentially modern flora and fauna.
