Bells having a very particular ceremonial significance in ancient or Roman Catholic ceremonies. It may refer to a bell mounted on a pole and carried in procession or otherwise displayed, signifying a cathedral (seat of a bishop) and its link to the Pope. It derives from a medieval practice where a mounted bell was used in papal processions to alert passersby of the approach of the Pope. The term may also refer to a distinctive Etruscan or Roman carved or decorated ceremonial or funereal bell, or such a bell-shape depicted in two dimensions in a relief sculpture or wall painting.
