Scope note
Refers to maiolica with usually polychrome decorations of historical, mythological, Biblical, or allegorical scenes painted over most of the surface. It was first produced about 1500 and is associated with Urbino. The earliest examples were decorated only in the well of plates and dishes; later the decoration extended to the entire inner surface. Images were often derived from works of contemporary artists, notably those reproduced in the engravings of Marcantonio Raimondi.
