Scope note
Devotional art in the form of prints on parchment, paper or linen sold at sacred sites; often recognizable as such by a text or inscription referring to the place of pilgrimage. These are known in both European and Asian cultures. Woodblock prints of this type became popular in nineteenth century Japan as travel became more accessible, and prints from multiple temples were collected and adhered together on scrolls or screens.
