Scope note
General reference for the culture and styles of the Iroquois-speaking Native North American tribe called Tuscarora. Their name derives from an Iroquoian term for “hemp gatherers”; they were noted for their use of indigenous hemp for fiber and medicine. They coalesced as a people around the Great Lakes at about the time of the rise of the historic Iroquois tribes' five nations that was based in the area of present New York state. At the time of European settlement in the 16th century, the Tuscarora primarily occupied what is now North Carolina. Today, the Tuscarora are federally recognized and hold lands in New York state.
