Scope note
Holes in the ground used to hold the foot of post components of fences or other structures. In the context of archaeology, these are recognizable as circular patches of darkened earth, where wood has decayed, or the hole has later been filled with a different material. Postholes are important to archaeologists to plot the layout of former building structures.
