ball courts (Mesoamerican courts)
- Scope note
- Playing areas and associated viewing platforms of the ancient Mesoamerican ritual ball game. The court was shaped like a capital I with serifs and oriented north–south or east–west; it represented the heavens. Players, wearing heavy padding, used elbows, knees, and hips to knock a solid rubber ball into the opponent’s end of the court.
