relic covers
- Scope note
- Envelopes or other simple coverings for relics, which are the remains of a saint, martyr, deity, or other holy person, or their personal items; known in many cultures. Relic covers are made of materials such as paper, leather, silk or another textile; often inscribed, stamped, embroidered, or otherwise decorated. Relic covers may themselves be considered holy from having been in contact with the relic; relic covers may be swapped out and the used cover distributed to the faithful for veneration or perceived healing properties. For more substantial containers for relics, often made of precious materials, use "reliquaries."
