Scope note
Hair binders with two feather tassels worn by Nahua elites in the postclassic period. These were insignia of tlahtohqueh (rulers) and given as prestigious gifts to nobles and warriors in recognition of their military achievements. Several varieties were made with speicific feathers: cuauhtlalpiloni with eagle feathers, quetzallapiloni with quetzal feathers, zacuantlalpiloni with zacuan feathers, and xolotlalpiloni with yellow parrot feathers. The same term may also be used for decorations hanging from capes, sandals and other costume items.
