Scope note
General term referring to members of many species in the order Artiodactyla, including well-known large grazing mammals such as cattle, goats, sheep, deer, antelope, camels, and llamas. Ruminants digest food by regurgitating semi-digested cud to re-chew it in order to extract the maximum possible food value. Ruminants are often divided into suborders Ruminantia and Tylopoda. Other other large grazing mammals such as kangaroos and horses are not strictly ruminants, although they have similar adaptations for surviving on large quantities of low-grade food.
