Scope note
Refers to the clerical fanon garment as worn from the late twelfth century onward, when it was worn solely by the pope, as decreed by Pope Innocent III. The papal vestment was originally called an "orale," but later became known as a "fanon orale." The present collar-like form of the garment appeared in the sixteenth century or later.
