Scope note
Late 18th-century English name for long, low, upholstered sofas. The term 'ottoman' first appeared in Le Bastide's "La Petite Maison" of 1753-1754. The French term is more precise, usually referring more specifically to ottomans built on an oval plan with one end higher than the other.
