Members of a genus containing two living species of amphibious rodents native to North America, Europe, and Asia. Beavers have short legs, a stout body, a small, broad, blunt head, large chisel-shaped incisor teeth, a broad, oval, horizontally-flattened, scaly tail, palmated hind feet, and a coat of soft fur. They are distinguished by their ability to chew through trunks and cut down trees, constructing huts of mud and wood for habitation, and dams for preserving a supply of water.
