Scope note
Use generally for various types of light portable firearms used in Europe from the 14th to the early 17th century, fitted with a stock which allowed them to be held against the cheek, chest, or shoulder. The first models had a hooklike projection on the underside of the barrel to absorb recoil, and were rested upon a surface when fired.
