Scope note
Afro-Cuban drums, generally single-headed and with nail tension, approximately cylindrical or barrel-shaped and open at the bottom; they are played with two drumsticks. For the snared double-headed cylindrical drums of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, see "bembes."
