Scope note
Carved tripod stand that was popular as a type of furniture, particularly in Neoclassical French design. Often used as a washstand. It was based on the style of the metal tripod on the choregic monument of Lysikrates and also found in Herculaneum. The form was reconstructed by James Stuart as a motif at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire. The form is also depicted in a painting by Joseph-Marie Vien, "La Vertueuse Athénienne" (1763), and thus the name is derived.
