Scope note
Spiritual objects made by vodouisants (oungans and mambos) during ceremonies, or for rituals. These are usually in the form of a bottle containing a variety of substances derived from plant and animal ingredients, and that are wrapped in textiles and embellished in a variety of ways. These objects themselves are derived from African spiritual practice, where similar objects called minkisi or nkisi are found, in particular from Congo. Paquets congo sometimes have arms or other anthropomorphic features, and usually involve a technique of careful wrapping, seven or nine times, as a symbol of connecting forces.
