Rastafari

- A religious and political movement originating in Jamaica in the 1930s that identifies the former Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as the Messiah, and Africans as the chosen people of the Bible. Rastafarians, or Rastas adhere to codes of behaviour and dress, including the wearing of dreadlocks, the smoking of cannabis as a sacrament, and a diet that excludes pork and shellfish.
