- Identification of a group of people as distinct from other groups on the basis of physical or socially defined characteristics, such as the color of skin, language, nationality, ethnic group, or a combination of multiple characteristics. More recently race has been considered an obsolete or non-scientific system of classification though it is widely and commonly used for categorization still in contexts such as a census.
