An individual's concept of self as male, female, a combination of both, or neither. One's gender identity can be the same or different from a sex assigned at birth, and may be expressed by social or cultural distinctions and differences, rather than biological ones. For the concept of physiological traits that distinguish the males and females of a species, use "sex." For the sum of an individual's sexual emotions, ideas, and behavior, use "sexuality." For roles in society based on biology, use "sex roles."
