Scope note
In the design of Turkoman rugs, a large, usually eight-sided geometrical motif (although it may be hexagonal or lozenge-shaped), "gul" originally from the Persian for "rose." It originally represented a stylized rose but subsequently was modified in ways characteristic of various tribes. The motifs constitute the primary decorative elements of Turkoman weavings.
