Scope note
Rectangular ornaments or framing devices that contain an inscription or image, with triangular or semicircular winglike handles on two sides. These appear in a variety of contexts including mosaics, architecture, pottery, amulets, and sculpture, especially dedicatory or funerary inscriptions. They are based on objects of the same shape that were a popular form of Roman votive tablet.
