Scope note
General term for many types of microscopic organisms that were formerly thought to be a related group, but are today believed to instead represent organisms that do not necessarily share a common evolutionary history. They have in common that they are single-celled and heterotrophic eukaryotes, have a membrane-bound nucleus, are nonfilamentous, and are confined to moist or aquatic habitats, ubiquitous worldwide. Many are symbionts of other organisms, and some species are parasites.
