anoxia (environmental condition)
- Scope note
- The condition characterized by a total depletion in the level of oxygen or an oxygen level at or below 0.1%. Absence of oxygen in atmospheric or aquatic environments normally results in the death of living organisms. In a conservation context, anoxia may be deliberately induced as a means of insect control, by sealing objects in oxygen-free environments that are then purged with non-oxygen gas. For a low oxygen condition, use "hypoxia." For a medical condition characterized by lack of oxygen in the blood, use "anoxemia."
