Scope note
The process of becoming gelatinous. In conservation this may refer to a chemical deterioration of parchment and leather tanned with condensed vegetable tannins, where collagen turns into water-soluble gelatin. This occurs as a reaction to substantial fluctuations in temperature and moisture or when parchment and such materials are stored under acidic condition.
