Scope note
Objects that are improvised or makeshift, particularly those that are created to give new use to an old, broken, or cast-off item. Applies most often to items of clothing, furniture, or household items, for example, a new garment created from old items of clothing or a broken piece of mirror mounted in a new frame. The term is distinguished from "spolia," which refers to older architectural materials (e.g., ancient columns or carvings) built into a new fabric (e.g., a Medieval building).
