Scope note
Dances of a particular type from the Republic of Congo and nearby areas, probably originally associated with initiation rites. Today the dance has become popularized and secularized, forming part of the Congolese folkloric traditions and performed on state and other national festival occasions. The dancers wear or hold kebe-kebe masks or heads.
