- Form of comic Japanese theater performed since the 14th century. It developed alongside Noh theatre and often used to be performed as a light-hearted interlude, consisting of one scene, between acts of Noh. In the present, these plays are also often performed separately. This type of theater relies on mime, dialogue and fixed stereotypes of characters.
