naturalism (artistic form of expression)
- Scope note
- A general term for a quality of art works in which the depiction is based on or seems to be based on the direct observation of the external world, particularly as such works are contrasted to works that are more stylized, abstract, or dependent on stereotypes. Although a work may be both naturalistic and realistic, naturalism is distinguished from realism because it does not tend to necessarily include or focus on the flaws and imperfections of the subject depicted; a work may be both naturalistic and somewhat idealized in the exclusion of major flaws and ugliness.
