Scope note
Organized, regular methods of representing information and communicating thoughts or ideas, typically tied to a language. Writing systems use a set of visible marks, forms, or structures called characters or graphs that are related to some structure in the linguistic system. Examples containing general attributes or categories of writing systems include alphabets, syllabaries, logographies, and others; any one system may comprise attributes of more than one category.
