Scope note
Specifically refers to the work of the "Lukasbrüder," a group founded in Vienna in 1809 by Friedrich Overbeck, later derisively called "Nazarenes." The style is anti-academic and emulates techniques of the late Medieval and early Renaissance period, particularly Dürer and Perugino, and places an emphasis on Christian values and morality in art over technical virtuosity.
