Scope note
A diagnostic method based on electromagnetic measurement of the permittivity of the material under investigation, such as brick, plaster, and stone. The theoretical concept is based on the measurement of the dielectric contrast between water and the host material in the microwave frequency range, and is successful up to 2 cm in depth. In conservation, this method has been usefully employed for determining by non-invasiveway the moisture and salts content inside materials.
