Biologically mediated loss of utilitarian or physical characteristics of a material caused by bacteria or other microorganisms. Biodeterioration includes only physical disintegration and cosmetic disfigurement. For deterioration that includes molecular changes to a material such that characteristic properties of the material are no longer evident, use 'biodegradation.'
