The Christian doctrinal concept that the Virgin Mary was free from original sin from the moment of conception, unlike all other humans after Adam and Eve. Although this belief was promulgated as Roman Catholic dogma by Pope Pius IX in 1854, it has been rejected by Protestants and the Orthodox Church.
