Scope note
Various activities or disciplines concerning combat and self defense that arose as the fighting arts of the warrior and are now often practiced as sport. They include both armed and unarmed forms of combat, as well as non-combative styles. Martial arts traditionally emphasize control, spiritual training, and the unity of body and mind. Many are of East Asian origin.
