Scope note
A type of intimate mixture in which is embedded polymeric molecules, resulting in high viscosity. Other materials, such as solvents or chelating agents, may be added to the dispersion to increase its efficacy. Its texture can be described as that of a peelable gel. In conservation, it has been used in the cleaning of paintings and removing adhesives as it leaves no residue. An example is an HPVD made of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) molecules crosslinked with borax.
