reaping hooks (agricultural equipment)
- Scope note
- Tools comprising bent or straight blades attached to wood handles or helves. The blades are usually sharpened and smooth, and are used variously as cutting or gathering tools. As a cutting tool, reaping hooks are used to cut grain with a rapid chopping motion. For similar tools used to cut grain with a short sawing motion, use "sickles." Serrated cutting edges generally distinguish sickles from reaping hooks.
