Scope note
Designs formed by manipulating string on and around the fingers, or other body parts. They may consist of singular images or be created and altered as a game, known as a string game or in sequence as a string story. String figures have also been used for divination, such as to determine the gender of an unborn child. The game of cat's cradle involves the use of string figures. String figures can be pinned down for collecting purposes. For the strings used to create these, use 'finger strings'.
