mappō
- Scope note
- The clearest expression of apocalyptic thought in Japanese Buddhism, this third and final age of Buddhism was believed to have begun in 1052. During this end of the Buddhist Law, Buddhism is thought to degenerate to the point where the teaching still exists, but there is no true practice of it. This religious pessimism and preparation for the end times caused a flurry of art commissions during the late Heian period in areas such as sculpture, calligraphy, painting and temple building by wealthy aristocrats who hoped to gain salvation by honoring Amida Buddha.
