- Interplanetary bodies of relatively small size that enter the Earth's atmosphere at high velocity, burn and heat the air around themselves causing a resultant luminous phenomenon that is called a "meteor." If such an object survives its plunge through the atmosphere and lands on the ground, it is called a "meteorite."
